Right Brain VS Left Brain: What’s the Difference?

The human brain is one of the largest and most complex organs in our bodies. Split into two distinct cerebral hemispheres connected by the corpus callosum, it is widely believed that the right and left hemispheres control separate aspects of your cognitive functions, dictating certain personality traits. While the left brain excels in areas such as fact, logic and maths, the right brain revolves around creativity, visualisation and the arts. Heguru method are the experts in right brain training, and we’re here to share more about the differences between the right and left brain.

Emotions

The right hemisphere of your brain is thought of to be home to emotion, intuition, your artistic endeavours, and sensitivities. This is closely related to the emotional abilities of a child with the right side of the brain taking in sensory information related to emotions and processing it. That information from the right side of the brain then crosses over to the left side, complementing the functions of the left brain that help to make sense of that information. Going through right brain training in a child’s developmental years has also been found to boost EQ and allow them to develop a sense of self-confidence.

Music

When it comes to right brain training, even listening to a new type of music can be beneficial. It stimulates the auditory cortex of the right cerebral hemispheres and increases creativity. The right brain is also seen as the more subjective and creative hemisphere that focuses more on the melody of a piece of music. The left hemisphere on the other hand, is considered the analytical part of the brain, and is responsible for the understanding of musical structure and motor skills, such as playing an instrument. This makes playing music an excellent exercise for the entire development of the brain.

Visualisation and creativity

It is said that creativity is a gift that not everyone is blessed with. But studies have shown that creativity is a skill that can be acquired over a period of time through practice and right brain training. Completing puzzles such as Tangram quickly can help to stimulate your child’s visualisation and creativity. Cognitive abilities such as hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills as well as memory are also developed during the process of play.

Analysis

Those with dominant left brains are usually known to be more quantitative and analytical. They don’t let feelings get in the way when making decisions and like to do things in an orderly fashion. These individuals tend to be more realistic, logical and remove subjective opinions out of the equation and focus on the facts.

Critical thinking

Typical left-brainers are goal-oriented and well organised critical thinkers who are rarely absent-minded. The left hemisphere of the brain is also said to be better at processing language, critical thinking, logical reasoning, and numbers.

Tapping on the right brain’s unlimited capacity will lead to the left brain benefiting from increased brain power.
