Right Brain Activities Parents Can Involve their Children in
Early childhood education experts have found from various studies that a key aspect to academic success is a well developed brain. This means that development of both the left and the right brain must be equally optimal. But with the amount of emphasis placed on left brain development in Singapore’s education system, brain balance is often compromised, making it hard for a child’s full potential to be unleashed. Efforts to develop the brain should begin early, as a child’s early years build the foundation for higher learning, and success in life. But what can parents do to support that growth? Heguru Method is the leader in right brain training for children, and we share some activities that are great for parents to get their children involved in.
Visual memory games
Visual memory is the skill that enables a child to recognise, remember, and apply information quickly and easily. Involving your child in visual memory games is beneficial for right brain training. Healthy visual memory skills are also vital for reading and ease of comprehension.
First, get your child to look at images consisting of different shapes and colours. Thereafter, ask them to replicate these images from their memory through drawings or the use of shape blocks to recreate the exact same image shown. Alternatively, another fun activity you can try with your child to develop visual memory is a game of I Spy, which doesn’t require anything but your eyes. Take turns choosing an object in the environment around you and have the other person guess what it might be.
Flashcards
Flashcards are essentially pictorial cards that are shown in quick succession to a child, accompanied by a vocalised description of the words or photos on it. This activity can be done at a young age even before your child can identify the items in images. As the cards are flashed at high speeds, the right brain is stimulated and a child’s photographic memory is enhanced while trying to recall the cards as they are being flashed.
Introducing flashcards to children not only builds cognitive skills, but helps create a fun and interactive session at home. You can even use flashcards as a tool for teaching a new language to your little ones. We recommend the use of flashcards with large and colourful pictures without any words for the right brain development of babies.
Tangram puzzles
Tangram puzzles are an excellent right brain training activity for children as it develops cognitive abilities such as hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Invented in China approximately 200 years ago, a tangram is a two-dimensional puzzle created by cutting a square into seven geometric shapes. Arranged correctly, these tangram shapes can be fitted together as a large square, rectangle, or triangle. They can also be arranged in a variety of intricate and fanciful shapes, such as people, animals, letters, and many more.
Playing with tangram puzzles is a great opportunity for your children to learn while having fun. In addition, it is also a super affordable and accessible toy that you can keep your young ones entertained with anywhere you go. Heguru Method has developed our own in-house tangram puzzle which consists of nine pieces, upping the challenge and brain power of our students.
Right brain development plays a crucial role in laying the foundation for effective cognitive development. We hope this article has been useful in incorporating right brain training activities into your child’s everyday lives.
